Selma Norma Sandberg (Sommerfeldt)

November 3, 1938 - March 29, 2020

Tribute

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Selma Norma Sandberg our loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched.  Mom has gone on to join her beloved Glen.

She left us on March 29, 2020 while resting peacefully at her residence in Cranbrook.  She was in her 81st year.

She was born in Somme Saskatchewan where she spent her childhood, she moved with her family to Lumby, B.C. as a young woman.  She was working as a special needs teacher when she met the love of her life Glen and they married in 1957.  She was a loving mother to her children and a wonderful homemaker.  She and Glen moved the family to the Kootenays in 1972 residing at Baynes Lake.  In early 2000 they retired in Calgary where Glen passed and eventually Selma settled into the Jaffray Seniors housing complex in 2001.

Selma was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals and baking for her family and friends. She kept an immaculate house, was highly skilled with a crochet hook and enjoyed her job delivering rural route mail to the community for many years. A farm girl at heart she also loved gardening and canning. Mom was unique in that even though she was strong, stubborn and independent everyone who knew her loved Mom for her contagious laugh, her sparkle, her jokes and occasional borderline inappropriate behaviour.

Selma was predeceased by her loving husband Glen in 2000, parents Johannes and Johanna Sommerfeldt, in-laws Dorothy and John Sandberg, brother Ernest Sommerfeldt and his wife Maryanne as well as her special friend Richard Smith.

Selma was immensely proud of her family and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories for her children Julie (Lincoln), Randy (Grace), Darren (Kim), Laurel (Mario), Dale (Kathy) and her chosen son Darren Hopp.  Her grandchildren Travis (Amy), Joey (Joanna), Daniel (Abigail), Kendra (JP), Chantelle (Manuel), Jessica (Jeff) and Allison.  Gigi (Great Grandma) also cherished all of her great-grandchildren Anika, Ava-Jo, Maddox, Kitra, Costen, Kessiney, Oscar and Astrid.  Selma is also survived by her dear sisters Irma McCluskey and Donna Faye.

There are many other family and friends in Mom’s life that were ever so important to her and we want to say thank you for the love and friendship you have shared with Mom over her life.

A heartfelt thank you to all involved in Mom’s care over the past years as she battled with her health.  Special thanks to Dr. Caroline Shilhan for treating Mom with such care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers those who wish to give a gift to honor Selma please give to one of the organizations that were near and dear to her.  The Glen Sandberg Memorial Park, c/o Baynes Lake Community Society, 468 Jaffray Baynes Lake Rd., Baynes Lake, B.C. V0B 1T0.  The Sand Creek Seniors Drop In Center, Box 369, Jaffray, B.C. V0B 1T0 or the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary Society, 30 – 8th Avenue South, Cranbrook, B.C. V1C 2K3.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Selma when the family is able to arrange it.

To the Sandberg family. We were sorry to hear of Selma’s passing. It was always a treat to meet her anywhere. She had such a happy, positive way of interacting, even if it was the hospital we met her at! Cherish your good memories of your mom.

From: June and Bernard Robins
Relation: Friend

Selma was friends with Bernard’s mom Olive. Such a nice person with a really nice family. I’m sure that she is missed.
