Mary Shypitka (Janco)

July 1, 1918 - November 29, 2018

Tribute

Mary passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the age of 100 years.  She was born in Broderick, Saskatchewan on July 1, 1918 and was the oldest of 12 children born to Helen and Martin Janco.

At the age of six her family moved to Fernie, BC.  Here she lived with her family until she met Sylvester Shypitka and married him.  They lived their lives in Cranbrook where they raised five boys.  Mary was always the consummate homemaker and was very family oriented. Throughout her life she loved her gardening: whether it be growing vegetables, fruit or flowers.

Surviving Mary are her sons: Larry, Melvin, Gordon in Cranbrook, Michael (Carole) in Castlegar, a sister Agnes in Thousand Oaks, CA and a sister Shirley in Cumberland, BC.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.  Mary was predeceased by her husband Sylvester, her son John, her daughter-in-law Debbie, four brothers and six sisters. She was also predeceased by 13 brothers-in-law and 12 sisters-in-law.

Mary has been cremated and requested that there be no funeral service. The family will gather at a later date to hold a private celebration of her life. Those wishing to remember her may do so by making a donation to the charity or foundation of choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com.

To Gord, Larry, Mel and Michael,
Rick and I would like to tell you that we both feel very sad to know that your mom passed away. Mary was such a nice person and a perfect neighbour to us for forty-five and one-half years. You couldn’t have asked for a better mom, wife, homemaker and gardener. Whenever I visited with Mary (which wasn’t often enough) I always marveled at how up on everything she was. I find it hard to believe that Mary isn’t still home. I do know that she is watching over all of you and your families. Also, I would like to tell you, Gord, that you have done an amazing job of taking care of your mom with the help of Larry and Mel. All of you deserve a pat on the back for being there for her and allowing her to live in her own home right to the end. Take care of yourselves and remember that we’re here if you need anything.
