Tribute

Susan Patricia Walp
December 29, 1954 – June 28, 2026

Susan Walp, aged 71, passed away suddenly at home in Cranbrook, BC, on June 28, 2026. Born to Robert Walp and Maria McNamee Walp in Victoria, BC, on December 29, 1954, Susan grew up in Pasadena, California, with her four siblings under the care of their stepmother, Virginia Walp. She returned to Canada to study at McGill University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1976, and then at the University of British Columbia, earning a Master of Science in Botany in 1979. Susan’s passion for nature, especially native plants, was expressed through her landscaping business, her involvement with the Rocky Mountain Naturalists, and the many, many hikes she went on throughout her life. Susan is survived by brothers Bernie, Bobby, and Pat; sister Mary Cay; daughter Catherine Schwab (Devon Tucker); sons Paul (Raven-Rose) Schwab and David Schwab; and grandchildren Emmett, AJ, Thomas, Veronica, William, Mireya, Mary, Riley, and Aviva.

A memorial will be held at noon on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Cranbrook History Centre, reception and interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Susan’s name to the Rocky Mountain Naturalists or CODE.ngo (global literacy).

From: Mark Memorial Funeral Services

Mark Memorial Funeral Services Staff send our condolences to family and friends.

From: Clinton Pynn
Relation: Susan, her boys and I practiced karate together when they lived in Labrador City.

Heartfelt condolences to family and friends. Susan, David, Paul and I trained together in karate. Susan was an incredible lady, intelligent, kind and a friend I deeply respected.

From: Alicia Hennebury
Relation: Mother of her son in law.

I was fortunate to meet Susan because her daughter married my son, thereby blessing me with a beautiful daughter in law and then having the privilege of sharing the two most amazing granddaughters.. Even though I did not get to spend much time with her, she left an impression, one of warmth, kindness, intelligence, and ease of being in her company. I know she will be missed. My sincerest condolences to Catherine, Devon, Veronica, Mary, Paul and his family and David.
