Tribute

Richard Charles Buckman
“Charlie”

It is with great sadness the family and friends of Richard Charles Buckman announce his passing on November 9th, 2011 in Invermere B.C. at the age of 95. Charlie leaves behind his 11 children, 18 grand-children and 8 great-grandchildren and sister Addie Malone.

Born June 6, 1916 in Westport B.C. Son of Caroline Lum and James Buckman and one of seven children. Charlie went to school in Athalmer and left home at the age of 15 to work in Alberta as a cowboy and tourist guide till 1939. In 1942 he joined the Forestry Core of the 82nd Airborne British Army as a Parachuter. Charlie remained in service until 1946 then went to Burma Germany to help with the clean up after the war. In 1947 he made his way to Prince George and worked on clearing of the right of way for the Hart highway. From 1948-1954 he worked for CP rail. From 1955-1968 he worked at the McDonald sawmill, then graded lumber and was a planner in Elko and Radium. In 1950 he married Edna Auld and they had 11 children. Charlie was widowed in 1965 and years later he was Common-Law with Rose Michelle from Windermere for 14 years. He went to Kenora Ontario in 1976 until his retirement at 65yrs. He stayed at the A’qam Community Care home in 1991 until its closing in 2004. He then was at Rocky Mountain Lodge for a short period of time until his move to Columbia House in Invermere B.C. where he spent his remaining years.

Charlie was an avid outdoorsman and had a great love for the outdoors and John Wayne. He knew the mountains and trails within the area like the back of his hand even until his last days. He was passionate about music and loved all varieties, enjoying bluegrass to classical. Charlie will be lovingly remembered for his quick wit and playfulness by many.

To honor Charlie’s wishes no service was or will be held. If anyone wishes memorial donations can be made to the Salvation Army.
