The mountains are calling and I must go” John Muir.
On the afternoon of Sunday, November 15, 2015, Paul Mill Dickeson died at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 83 years. Paul was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia on September 30, 1932.
He leaves to cherish his memory his dearly loved wife of 56 years, Maggie, his three children; Holly (Mark), Ian (Niki) and Kirst, four grandchildren; Craig, Eric, Connor and Chloe and his two beloved dogs.
Paul was an avid outdoorsman who thrived in his passion to hike and ski in the mountains. He found great solace and peace while in the hills and taught us to appreciate and love the beauty of this area. We will remember him for his kindness, strength, compassion and booming laugh.
Paul was a well-respected teacher at Mount Baker Secondary School and was loved by many of his students. He was the epitome of the phrase, “a gentleman and a scholar”. He will be deeply missed by many.
If you’d like to pay your respects to Paul, he will be on Windy Pass in the summer.

One of the best memories I have of high school is Mr Dickeson’s English class.
When I think back to his teaching what I remember most strongly is a passionate, vibrant, critical educator.
I still have the Roget’s Thesaurus he presented to me prior to Graduation.
Whether I am reading or writing, as I enjoy the love of the written word, I will also hold the memory of one of my most important mentors: Mr Dickeson.

It is with profound sadness and a sense of loss that Rod and I read of Paul’s death. I have sent word to Brendon who greatly admired him as a teacher at Mt. Baker. I will miss all the laughs we shared doing the grocery shopping.

We have fond memories meeting him now and then and having catch-up conversations on his escapades in the hills. We’ll remember him as a person who always thought with the glass half full.

It is three days since receiving the very sad message that Paul had died. I am still feeling a sense of shock.
From the earliest days of their arrival in Kimberley, Paul and Maggie made friends, and were soon swept up in the joys of life that Kimberley offered. Maggie joined the Lost Dog Singers and Paul was a faithful follower. I played the tea chest for the group, a homemade, somewhat embarassing, odd-looking version of the upright bass. As I would lug the awkward box into a gig, Paul would grab it from me and carry it into the hall like a trophy. My hero!
I like to think that Paul and I had a special relationship. Both of us were born in 1932; Paul was 19 days my senior. We had a common interest in outdoor activities, and both of us were educators. In my later role as a university faculty advisor of student teachers, I had the pleasure of witnessing Paul teach in the classroom. He was an excellent mentor and model for student teachers. It was impressive to experience the comfortable rapport and atmosphere that Paul shared with his pupils. Our student teachers learned very much from him about the art and science of teaching.
Although Paul and I saw less of each other later in life, I feel that suddenly there is a hole in my life. My empathy and feelings are now for Maggie and family. Susan and I will no longer look for Paul at the symphony performances but we will join you all on Windy Pass come the summer.
