Nancy Jane Lancaster

December 24, 1932 - September 14, 2011

Tribute

With sad hearts, the family of Nancy Jane Lancaster announce her passing on Monday, September 12, 2011 in Cranbrook, BC at the age of 78 years.

Nancy was born on December 24, 1932 in Waldo, BC to Bill and Alice Dilts. She attended school at Waldo until high school. She cooked in logging camps in Newgate where she met and later married Len Lancaster (Dec 5, 1951). They resided in Newgate and then moved to Grasmere (1961) where they purchased and ran the Red Creek Ranch. In the latter years she resided in Smithers, Prince George, Jaffray and Fernie (at the Tom Uphill Memorial Home).

Nancy was a wonderful ranch wife but most of all a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She leaves to mourn her passing her six children; Dave (Judy), Stan (Sue), Darlene Bedell (Dale Fagin), Karen (Barry) Barton, Jody Baher (Brett Gunderson), Jim (Nadine); her daughter-in-law Linda; 17 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Also left to mourn are her 6 sisters and 3 brothers, many relatives and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Len; her brothers Harold and Russell as infants and Alfred (Buzzy) Dilts; sister Lillian (Lil) Willems and her grandson, Cam Lancaster

She was a life member of the Triangle Women”s Institute and also served on the Board. She was involved with a number of their projects, one being the Children”s Hospitals in BC. Nancy was well known for her wonderful cooking. She helped at many guide and outfitter camps as the camp cook but most importantly, she helped her son Stan at his hunting camp as the cook. This expertise led her to teach guide / outfitter cooking at the college in Smithers, BC. Nancy was also very crafty – everybody in the family has socks, a toque, mitts or a coat made by her. She loved to quilt and do ceramics until her failing eyesight didn”t allow her to do so any longer. Everyone in the family has a keepsake of one of her creations.

A Celebration of Nancy”s Life will be held on Friday, October 28, 2011 at the Grasmere Hall at 1:00 pm. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Nancy may do so to The BC Children”s Hospital Foundation, 4480 Oak St., B321, Vancouver, BC V6H 3V4. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com
