Michael (Mike) Wayne Hembroff

July 23, 1953 - August 31, 2024

Tribute

On the morning of Saturday, August 31st, 2024 Mike Hembroff passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mike was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Sk. He attended King Edward Elementary and Riverview view high school. He spent his younger years with his brothers, Dave, Rick, Tim, Kevin and Brian in River Park. He enjoyed sports, hunting and fishing. He met the love of his life, Verna down in River Park. They married in 1972 in Moose Jaw and moved with their daughters, Tammy and Carrie to Weyburn, SK in 1977. He worked at SGI, where he made many friends and retired after a long career. Mike joined the Kinsmen in Moose Jaw and carried on with the club in Weyburn where he made several great friends. He played hockey for much of his adult life and moved to curling after he retired. Mike spent a lot of time at the cabin in White Bear and the White Bear Golf Course with his lake family.

When Mike first retired, He and Verna spent their winters in Mexico and summers in SK and BC. Mike and Verna moved to BC after retiring to follow their dreams of living in the mountains. Mike loved mountain life and the many adventures he had on his side by side. He spent time fishing and camping with his new BC friends. He got back into skiing and even tried out sledding a couple times.

Mike loved life and all the adventures and took every opportunity to explore the mountains and all they had to offer.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Verna, two daughters Tammy (Tom), Carrie (Brad), his grandchildren, Taylor (Seb), Matthew (Renae), Bransen, Hannah and Graeme, and one great-grandchild, Carter. He leaves his brothers Dave, Rick (Cheryl), Tim (Connie), Kevin (Bev), Brian (Teresa) and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends who were like family. He loved all his family and was proud of them all.

A celebration of life for Mike will be held at the Canal Flats Civic Center, Saturday, September 28th, at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Cancer Society.

From: Brenda & Paul DeJong
Relation: Sister-in-Law and Brother-in-Law

We are still so sad about your loss of Mike, Miguel, beer partner, golf partner, card player, quad riding buddy, steak cooker and all around wonderful man. Paul misses him but was glad that we got to see him this summer and we both miss our card games and Friday night steak dinners in Mexico. I heard Robbi call him her favorite Uncle at His Celebration of Life. I can add that I have considered him my favorite Brother-in-Law ( but shhhh don’t tell the others ) so hearing that from her made me smile. Having known him since I was a little girl makes this so difficult but a special memory was that he was always willing and happy to pick me up at the airport on my many flights back for family holidays from everywhere. Mike always was curious to know and understand my experiences in life, he always asked me “What do all these experiences/work and travel make you feel?” He really liked my answer of “It makes me really thankful that I was born a Canadian.” He was always genuinely interested and that was always appreciated.
Another fun memory was when his girls were really little and down at Mary’s ( his Mom’s ) just before Christmas, I was invited to help wrap gifts and enjoy the company. There was a discussion about whether Santa wrapped the gifts or not, I just then found out that at the Hembroff household he wraps gifts but at the Therens household he he doesn’t so this was fun. I put together some toys and wrapped them but an elephant riding toy on wheels for Carrie after putting it together, I asked who it was from….Santa was the answer so I said good no wrapping and Mike said yes it needs to be wrapped so my next step was to roll it over to him and said “Have Fun, Santa” laughed out loud 😂 and sat back down to drink my wine and watch him try to wrap that awkward toy. After a few tries he shook his head and said I don’t think that Santa needs to wrap the toys this year. Always fun times. We Loved him very much and will miss him forever. Love to you Verna and your entire Family ❤️
