Tribute

Margaret Mary Holmes
1915 – 2011

It is with great sadness that the family of Margaret Mary Holmes announce her passing on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the F. W. Green Home in Cranbrook, BC. She was 95 years of age.

Margaret leaves to mourn her passing three sons: Kent (Darlene) of Grasmere, Ron (Dorothy) of North Vancouver and Dean (Flo) of Faro, Yukon. Also left to remember her loving ways are six grandchildren: Lori, Gordon, Scott, Jennifer, Melissa and Tyson, two foster grandchildren; Taylor and Malachi, as well as eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Avery on February 9, 1978 after 39 years of marriage.

Margaret was born in Fernie on November 15, 1915 to Meth and Mary Gorrie. She was the eldest of seven siblings and was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her parents: Methven and Mary Gorrie and her siblings; Earl, Doug, Joe, Doreen, Lorraine and Tommy.

Margaret grew up on farms, first in Dorr in the 1920s, then in Grasmere in the 1930s where she met and married Avery Holmes in 1939. They operated their own farm there (without electricity or running water) until 1956, when they moved to Cranbrook so their boys could attend high school. She became accustomed to hard work and was truly one of our last pioneer women. She lived in the same home until she had to move in 2009. She was always known for her wonderful gardening skills. Along with that went the canning and preserves she would tirelessly prepare for her family. She always kept herself busy and never wanted to sit idle.

Margaret was an artist and loved to draw sketches and paint with oils. Crafts were her speciality as she loved to knit, crochet, needlepoint or whatever could be done in a artful way. Everyone in the family is the recipient of at least one of her many prized projects whether it be a painting or an afghan. She always kept herself busy with something. When she was still able to drive she would take the elderly folk to Fort Steele for a tour and just to sight-see.

A memorial service will be held in the spring for Margaret. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Margaret”s memory to a charity you believe in. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com.

I wish to express my heart felt thoughts to all my cousins. Margie was truly the last pioneer of our generation who left us with much wisdom and example to follow. She also was a good friend to both my Dad & Mom and my fond memories were her visits bringing cookies.

Auntie Marge will be missed and reflecting on her passing reminds us of how quickly life passes by. She was a fine example of the pioneers who built Canada, and sadly there are so few left today. As a child visiting Auntie Marge with my Grandma and Grandpa was always memorable. All of the treats any kid could ever want and plenty of laughter! Our condolences to the Holmes family. Our thoughts are with you during this sad time.

Dear Friends and Family of Auntie Marge, We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Auntie Marge. I am sure there was great rejoicing as she joined so many of our family members in Heaven. I remember visiting Auntie Marge and the family when I was little. She gave us homemade root beer! It was wonderful! About 20 years ago, my mother and I visited her and she gave me one of her beautiful paintings. I think of her every time I see it. She was a wonderful, kind, and fun-loving lady and I know you will miss her very much. With our deepest sympathy, Tom & Vicky Greer Rollins, Crowley, Texas
