Mamie Marguerite Seabrook (Sweet)

December 12, 1928 - October 1, 2022

Tribute

We sadly announce the passing of Mamie Marguerite Seabrook (Sweet) at the age of 93.  The youngest of seven children, Mamie was born in a small home north of Pince Albert, Saskatchewan to Herbert and Laura Sweet. Mamie was only 18 months old when she lost her mother to tuberculosis. Shortly after her mother’s passing, her father also became ill and the majority of her care was distributed between her grandparents and her older siblings who were still at home.  She lost her father at age seven, at which time she lived primarily with her grandparents in Imperial, Saskatchewan. She moved to B.C. initially to live with her sister, May, at Kootenay Lake. Various circumstances then led to her living with several different families until she was twelve. Concerned with the care situation, her grandmother, at 88 years of age, sent for her through lettermail to return home to Imperial, where she remained with her until she got married.

Mamie attended Bible School in North Battleford, where she met her “hunny”, George Seabrook. They married in 1951. Both Mamie and George were active members in their church and it remained an integral part of thier lives. They stayed in North Battleford and cared for Mamie’s grandmother until her passing. In 1956 they moved to B.C. and made homes with their three children in both Nelson and Canal Flats. In their later years, George and Mamie chose to settle in Cranbrook.

Family was everything to Mamie and she took every opportunity to have her children, grandchildren, their friends, and future spouses into her home.  She shared a close bond with her three sisters and three brothers; their time together was full of laughter and love.  She also enjoyed time with friends, playing board games, carpet bowling, and especially loved volunteering at the Salvation Army. She had a gift for hospitatlity and her home was a safe haven for anyone needing a place to land. There are so many who still lovingly refer to her as “Mom”.

Mamie is survived by her children, Rodney (Janet) Seabrook, Beverly (Barry) Bahsler, and Milton (Kathrine) Seabrook, 8 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.  Mamie was predeceased by her husband, parents, and siblings.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
