Ida Bernice Murrell

April 19, 1919 - April 8, 2011

Tribute

Long time resident, Bernice Murrell passed away peacefully in the hospital on April 8th at the age of 91. The family is thankful to have been with her during her final days. She kept us laughting as long as she could. Bernice was predeceased by her beloved son Rod (1982) and her devoted husband Ray (1994). She was born and raised in Lasburn, Saskatchewan. As a young bride she followed husband Ray across Canada for 2 years, until his regiment was sent overseas. When the war was over the couple settled in Cranbrook and raised their 4 children: Rodney, Michael, Penny (McKee) and Wendy (Gallagher). At the time of her passing the family had grown to include her children”s spouses, 8 grandchildrlen (and 6 spouses) and 12 great grandchildren.
After retiring from her job with the Library Commission Services, Bernice embraced her role as the loving matriarch of an ever-expanding family. Throughout her life she was an avid reader and enjoyed using her many talents as a writer, poet, painter and crafter. She was an associated member of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years. Bernice loved to travel, and she and Ray made many trips to Mexico and the Oregon Coast. She developed a great loved for the ocean – especially for stormy seas and wild, crashing waves. This led her to begin a collection of lighthouses. The family was happy to oblige and the collection grew and GREW. To many people in town, Bernice is known as the lighthouse lady. The family would like to thank friends, extended family and community helper that have been such a postitive part of our lives over the years. A special thanks to Dr. Dawson. Mom”s relationship with him allowed everyone to find the humour in many difficult situations. We would also like to thank the residents and caregivers of Joseph Creek Village for teh friendship, kindness and care given to mom during her time there. Finally, we are grateful to the palliative care nurses who helped all of use through mom”s last journey. No service by request. We will miss you mom, but we know that our loss is Heaven”s gain.
