Gregg Douglas Nelson

June 19, 1957 - October 4, 2025

Tribute

Gregg Douglas Nelson was born on June 19, 1957, in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, to Evart and Audrey Nelson. He passed away on October 4, 2025, in Taguig City, Philippines, due to an acute myocardial infarction.

Gregg is lovingly remembered by his extended family in Taguig City: Herminila (Helen), Ana Maria, John, Rochell, and Efren. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda (Arnold) Hoffman of Calgary and Wendy Hardt of Nanaimo, as well as his nieces and nephews, Kirstin, Alia, Reid, and Carmen. Gregg was predeceased by his parents, Evart and Audrey Nelson.

Gregg had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed both work and play under open skies. An avid golfer, he rarely traveled without his clubs and often brought them along on his trips to the Philippines. In Canada, he enjoyed hunting in the fall, playing ball during construction season, and competing in league pool in Cranbrook. A devoted sports fan, Gregg took pleasure in watching just about any game.

Before settling into a long career with the Canadian Pacific Railway, Gregg worked in banking. He began his railway career in Revelstoke and later transferred to Cranbrook, British Columbia, where he worked until his retirement in 2013. After retiring, Gregg traveled to the Philippines to explore the possibility of making it his permanent home. There, he formed a close circle of expatriate friends and spent many happy days golfing around Metro Manila—often joking about the “out-of-bounds” areas that, according to Gregg, were home to poisonous snakes and spiders.

Gregg had met Helen and her family during earlier visits to the Philippines, and those connections became an important part of his life. A world traveller at heart, Gregg also visited Cuba and backpacked through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. Known for his dry sense of humor and love of pranks, Gregg could always be counted on for a laugh and will be fondly remembered for his wit and warmth.

No service or celebration of life is planned at this time. In Gregg’s memory, donations may be made to your local food bank.
