Tribute

George Stremel
1928—2012

It is with sadness that the family of George “Yogi” Stremel announces his passing at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital on July 21, 2012 at the age of 84.

Yogi was born to George and Katharine Stremel in Claybank, Saskatchewan on April 25, 1928. The middle child of seven, he grew up on the family orchard in Rutland, BC. He had a life long love of trees, collecting rocks and growing things with a green thumb.

Yogi began a forty two year mining career that started in Kimberley on the 3700 Haulage Way in 1948 and through the process of moving from mine to mine and town to town he wound up mining back in Kimberley in 1972, followed by his retirement in 1990. In the tradition of mining he was known as a small guy who more than carried his own in a big mans game.

Yogi met the love of his life Beryl and they were married in Kelowna, BC in 1954. They raised five children in mining communities such as Princeton, Silver Creek, Beaverdell, Riondel and finally Kimberley. Yogi enjoyed many sports and played fastball as catcher for storied teams like the Rutland Rovers and Riondel Giants. As his playing days wound down he moved to umpire and was known to the East Kootenay as a knowledgeable ball guy. A life passion was fishing, without a doubt each of the many fish he caught in his life time was as exciting as his first. We are sure these words are echoing around a number of lakes and streams; “Fish On” followed by “Oh it’s a dandy”.

Yogi is survived by his loving wife Beryl, their four children; Bruce (Janie), Howard (Brenda), David, Kathy (Ted). Nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Brothers and sisters; Ray (Nita), Katie, Mary (Harvey), Martin and Helen (Mike). Along with many extended family members and friends. Yogi is predeceased by his son Colin in 2011, his parents and brother John.

Yogi’s funeral service will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kimberley, Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 11:00 am. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honor of Yogi may do so to The East Kootenay Foundation for Health, 13—24 Ave. N., Cranbrook, BC V1C 3H9.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Kimberley Home Support and the Palliative Team at the Regional Hospital for the compassionate care to both patient and family.

Papa’s proudest and happiest moments were spent with family and friends
