Tribute

Edward “Muggs” William Bay

September 12, 1928 – June 21, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Muggs, in the early hours of June 21st, 2025, at the age of 96. Surrounded by family in his final days, he left this world gently, just as he lived; with quiet strength, deep love, and grace.

Born in Slocan BC, Ed was the 3rd eldest, raised by his devoted mother Willeta Bay (Hicks), alongside his 7 siblings; Doug (d.), Elmer (d.), Dorothy (s.) Jack (d.), Leonard (d.), Loren (d.), and Jean (d.). In his early years the family moved to Grand Forks where he spent an adventurous childhood swimming in the Kettle River and exploring the outdoors; moments that instilled in him a lifelong love of nature and simplicity.

At just age 14, he left school and began what would become a long, and respected, career with the Canadian Pacific Railway. Starting in 1944 as a wiper, he advanced to fireman, then locomotive engineer; working across Grand Forks, Nelson, and Revelstoke. His hard work and natural leadership earned him a promotion to Assistant Superintendent in 1972, servicing Cranbrook, Kamloops and later Coquitlam. After 42 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1986 and returned to Cranbrook. A community he always considered home. Known for his fairness, integrity, and quiet authority, Muggs was a manager admired by his peers and beloved by those he led.

In his personal life, he was a man of many friends and was deeply loved. He married his childhood sweetheart Lillian Bay (Chahley) on August 22nd,1955 in Coeur D’Alene. And, as timing tells its own story, they had their first child Rodney, 8 months later! This was the beginning of a full and busy life as they proceeded to have three more sons, Gary (d.1958), Richard and Gregory and one daughter, Sharon (d.1957). Muggs was a family man through and through; he was always there for anyone who needed help.

Predeceased by his wife, Lillian in 2012, after 57 years of marriage, their bond remained a guiding light in his life. Now after so many years apart, we take comfort in knowing they are together again. We imagine Lil had a mouthful for him as this was the first time he ever had to make her wait.

He is survived by his three sons, Rod (Nina), Rick, and Greg (Jen), 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; Shelby (Greg), Bradley (Emma), Kyra (Dan), Ashley (Devon) (Bronson & Hannah), Breanna (Mike), Kaitlyn, and Annabella. As precious friends become few in this stage of life, he is also survived by his oldest friend, Milley, and his sister, Dorothy. He now joins his best friend, Bob (Rastus) Rasmussen.

Ed was adored by all who knew him. His warmth, wisdom, and kind-hearted nature left an incredible mark on everyone lucky enough to cross his path. His legacy is one of love, family, and quiet resilience – a life well lived, and a man well loved.

A private family gathering will be held to honour his life.
