Edward "Murray" Evenson

September 27, 1953 - March 29, 2023

Tribute

Murray, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend, left this world on March 29, 2023, at home with his loving wife June by his side.

Murray was born September 27, 1953, to parents Gladys and Eddie in Winnipeg. Murray spent his youth skiing and camping with his siblings and parents. He loved being outside and was recognized for his interest in the outdoors when he received the Queens Scout award. Murray worked for the family business, Evanson Sheet Metal, while attending the University of Manitoba on a swimming scholarship, where he received a degree in Physical Education. It would be an understatement to say that Murray was smart, as he was selected and short listed to be a NASA astronaut.

Instead, Murray moved to Calgary where he had a rewarding career as a police officer, serving with the Calgary Police Service for almost 30 years.  He started as a beat cop and eventually worked in the K9 unit with the best partner he ever had, Police Service Dog Saxon. They worked together for 11 years, and it was the highlight of his career.  Murray was very proud of his time as a Field Training Officer, where he trained over a dozen officers who now carry on his legacy.

Murray met the love of his life, June, while working with the police service. Murray and June were married on March 27, 1982. They had one son, Bobby.  Murray loved to spend time with his family, especially traveling and camping. Murray and June traveled the world together, going to Alaska, Spain, Portugal, Arizona, the Caribbean, and Mexico, to name a few.

Murray had many skills and talents and a great passion for building things, including three beautiful homes for his family. He passed his love and knowledge of hunting, fishing, wood working, and being a general pain in the butt on to his son, and anyone else who would listen. He enjoyed being a leader and mentor to those that knew him. Always one to appreciate a good joke, Murray’s great sense of humor will be remembered by everyone who laughed along with him.

Murray was committed to volunteering and combined thousands of volunteer hours with Ducks Unlimited Canada, Scouts Canada, Moyie Community Association, and Aldridge Community Association. He always assumed a leadership role with these organizations. Murray was recently awarded Volunteer of the Year from the Regional District of East Kootenay.

Murray will be forever remembered and loved by his wife June, mother Gladys, son Bobby (Alisa), grandsons Ridge and Holt, sister Gail (Alan), brother Lyle (Donna), and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Murray was predeceased by his father Eddie.

Forever together in love, body, and spirit.

Details regarding a memorial gathering to follow.

I was very saddened to hear of Murray’s passing. I remember the good times I had as a young constable working along side him in 6 District, and then the after shift card games we had in his camper. He will be missed.

Relation: Calgary Police Service member who worked with Murray

I am saddened to hear of Murray’s passing. Murray was a remarkable human being, he was inspiring to work with and always good for a laugh especially at times needed to lighten up a bad situation. Murray was a good work friend and a man that always mentored the younger members of CPS. I will always remember Murray to be a man of good character and cherish that I was one of the lucky members to have worked around him. I will miss him greatly , but I will never forget him. Please accept my condolences.
