Edward "Murray" Evenson

September 27, 1953 - March 29, 2023

Tribute

Murray, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend, left this world on March 29, 2023, at home with his loving wife June by his side.

Murray was born September 27, 1953, to parents Gladys and Eddie in Winnipeg. Murray spent his youth skiing and camping with his siblings and parents. He loved being outside and was recognized for his interest in the outdoors when he received the Queens Scout award. Murray worked for the family business, Evanson Sheet Metal, while attending the University of Manitoba on a swimming scholarship, where he received a degree in Physical Education. It would be an understatement to say that Murray was smart, as he was selected and short listed to be a NASA astronaut.

Instead, Murray moved to Calgary where he had a rewarding career as a police officer, serving with the Calgary Police Service for almost 30 years.  He started as a beat cop and eventually worked in the K9 unit with the best partner he ever had, Police Service Dog Saxon. They worked together for 11 years, and it was the highlight of his career.  Murray was very proud of his time as a Field Training Officer, where he trained over a dozen officers who now carry on his legacy.

Murray met the love of his life, June, while working with the police service. Murray and June were married on March 27, 1982. They had one son, Bobby.  Murray loved to spend time with his family, especially traveling and camping. Murray and June traveled the world together, going to Alaska, Spain, Portugal, Arizona, the Caribbean, and Mexico, to name a few.

Murray had many skills and talents and a great passion for building things, including three beautiful homes for his family. He passed his love and knowledge of hunting, fishing, wood working, and being a general pain in the butt on to his son, and anyone else who would listen. He enjoyed being a leader and mentor to those that knew him. Always one to appreciate a good joke, Murray’s great sense of humor will be remembered by everyone who laughed along with him.

Murray was committed to volunteering and combined thousands of volunteer hours with Ducks Unlimited Canada, Scouts Canada, Moyie Community Association, and Aldridge Community Association. He always assumed a leadership role with these organizations. Murray was recently awarded Volunteer of the Year from the Regional District of East Kootenay.

Murray will be forever remembered and loved by his wife June, mother Gladys, son Bobby (Alisa), grandsons Ridge and Holt, sister Gail (Alan), brother Lyle (Donna), and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Murray was predeceased by his father Eddie.

Forever together in love, body, and spirit.

Details regarding a memorial gathering to follow.

June and Bobby. There are not enough words to often this blow. I watched over Murray in District 1, saw his first arrest with Saxon and then shared more than a few laughs in the unit. The tribute says it all especially that he loved sharing a good joke. Remember the great times and live for the best memories.

Murray was a great partner. I worked with him right after he left the Canine unit. It was hard for him at first because he hadn’t had a driver for 11 years. He did bring me dog treats though. We shared many nights talking about woodworking and construction. I am blessed to have worked with ham and to be able to call him a friend. Peace brother.

I worked with Murray in 6-1 in the early 1990’s. A good guy to be around who always had a smile and a great sense of humor. Thanks Murray for camaraderie while we worked in 6 District.

So sorry to learn of Murray’s passing. As a fresh new recruit he was my Field Training Officer and who I consider my first partner. Murray was knowledgeable and patient with an unending sense of humour. He was the character of Charlie Team in 6 District and a mentor to many. I will miss him.

Dear June and Bobby, Scott and I are so very sad to hear about Murray’s passing. He was such a wonderful person and our world has lost a beautiful soul. Please know that our thoughts and our hearts are with you and we hope that you find comfort in family and friends. Lots of love Scott and Debra

Another lost brother. Murray was one of the nicest guys to ever wear the uniform. I met him when he was in K9 and i never saw him without a smile on his face and a joke to share. He was a lovely man who was respected by us all and i can only imagine the pain his family is going through. Please accept my deepest condolences.

June I am so sorry to hear of Murray’s passing. It seems like such a short time ago when we were in recruit class together. When I think of Murray I always think of the “mall pass caper”. He was a good man with an incredible sense of humour. He’ll be dearly missed.
